JPG to PNG Converter

Convert JPG photographs to lossless PNG without uploading anything. Useful when a tool demands PNG, or when you need a format that will not degrade further on the next save.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use the JPG to PNG Converter

  1. Drop in your JPG files

One or many. They are decoded by your browser and never transmitted.

  2. Leave the width alone unless you need it smaller

Set a maximum width only if you want the output resized; 0 keeps the original dimensions.

  3. Download the PNG

Each file gets its own download button.

Expect the file to get bigger

This is the normal outcome and it surprises people every time. JPEG is lossy - it throws away detail to get small. PNG is lossless - it stores every pixel exactly. Converting one to the other means storing a perfect copy of an image that has already been degraded, so a 400 KB photograph routinely becomes a 2 MB PNG.

You are not gaining quality by doing this. The detail the JPEG discarded is gone, and the compression artefacts around sharp edges are now preserved precisely rather than being re-compressed away. Convert because something downstream requires PNG, not to improve the picture.

When converting JPG to PNG is the right call

When a tool or platform will only accept PNG. Some print services, app icon pipelines, design tools and older content systems reject JPEG outright.

When the image is about to be edited repeatedly. Every save of a JPEG re-compresses it and compounds the loss, so converting to PNG once and working in PNG stops the degradation accumulating across a dozen edits.

When you need to add transparency. A JPEG cannot hold an alpha channel, so cutting a background out means the file has to become a PNG first - though note that the conversion itself does not create transparency, it only makes it possible.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my file get bigger?
Because PNG is lossless and JPG is not. PNG stores every pixel exactly, including artefacts already present in the JPEG, so the result is usually several times larger. This is expected.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The detail a JPEG discarded when it was first saved cannot be recovered. Converting to PNG preserves what is left exactly, but adds nothing back.
Will the conversion add transparency?
No. The result is fully opaque. PNG can hold transparency, so you can now erase a background in an editor - but the conversion does not do it for you.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. It is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser, so it never leaves the device.
